The Consequences of Sex Bias in Preclinical Research

In mouse-based preclinical research, researchers often favor selection of one sex over the other for their studies. While sex-based model selection may sometimes have scientific justification, overlooking sex as a biological variable has several consequences. Single- sex studies can lead to skewed research, translatability issues, or flawed conclusions, and raise concerns regarding ethical practices and the 3Rs.

During this presentation, you will learn more about:

  • Scientific rationale for sex-specific mouse selection
  • The scientific impact of sex bias on multiple biological disciplines
  • The significant effects of sex bias on animal welfare
  • 3Rs guidelines and recommendations for eliminating sex bias in preclinical studies
